How to Write an Ode

An ode is a lyric poem that addresses a subject with elevated language, deep feeling, and often elaborate structure. It’s a poem of praise, celebration, or meditation.

Three Types of Ode

  • Pindaric Ode — Strophe, antistrophe, and epode. Grand and ceremonial.
  • Horatian Ode — Consistent stanza form, more meditative and personal.
  • Irregular Ode — Free in form but elevated in tone. Most modern odes.

Famous Odes

  • “Ode to a Nightingale” by John Keats
  • “Ode to the West Wind” by Percy Bysshe Shelley
  • “Ode to My Socks” by Pablo Neruda
